Buildings & Townscapes
Blåvandshuk Fyr is probably the most eyecatching building in Blaavand with its appr. 40 mtr. tall light house, which with its own rough charm marks the most western landmark of Denmark. Around the light house you find the hardly flattering concrete bunkers from world war two. The light house was built in the year 1900 as a replacement for the old angle light from 1888. Due to its location on a high dune, the light source is placed 55 meters. above sea level. The light source it self is fairly modest and is supplied by an electrical light lamp of 1000 watts and 220 volts. The very intense light beam, which is visible from sea at a distance of about 50 to 60 kilometers is produced by a rotating lens, which by use the mean of various shields, generates the characteristics of the light, 3 blinks each 20 secs. Daily opening hours of the light house is 10.00am till 04.00pm, but wenn the light starts, you have to leave the light house.

The famous 'Golden Horns' were found at Gallehus, the first by a lace maker, Kjerstine Svendsdatter, in 1639, and the second in 1734 by Erik Lassen, a small farmer. The sites are marked by memorial stones. The horns likely dated from about 400 AD and were probably used as part of some sort of religious ceremony. They were sent to the Royal Treasury in Copenhagen for safekeeping but were stolen in 1802 and melted down. Copies can be seen in Toender Museum.

Hanne's House is a remarkable museum, which faithfully maintains the atmosphere of a seamen's home. The house is from the end of the 18th century.
Hanne's House has been owned by the Sørensen family since 1839 when Hanne's parents moved in. Her father drowned in 1860. Hanne's mother lived in the house until her death. In 1882 Hanne and her husband inherited the house. In 1884 when Hanne was 34 years old she became a widow as her husband was shipwrecked. Hanne, and later, her two daugters Karen and Maren, took great care of the house and its interior. Its furnishing has continually been used until 1965. On Fanø the house is the best preserved from the flourishing period of sailing ships.
The museum is set in Sønderho not far from the harbour.

Man meets the Sea
Visitors arriving in Esbjerg from the sea are greeted by Svend Wiig Hansen’s monumental sculpture "Man meets the Sea", which was raised on the occasion of Esbjerg celebrating its 100th anniversary as an independent municipality in 1994. It was officially unveiled on 28 October 1995.
The sculpture portrays the meeting between pure, unspoilt mankind and nature. Man, innocent as from his mother’s womb. Man before rising up and beginning to act. That, according to Wiig Hansen, was where things started to go wrong - when man got"dirt" on his hands.
Wiig Hansen has portrayed this encounter by creating a universal sculpture that has the mood of a temple, of an acropolis - a sculpture with a sacred aura to it. This sacred aura is attained by the rigid appearance of the human figures, something which reminds the onlooker of the Memnon columns or Ramses II gazing out over the Nile Valley at Abu Simbel. It is also impossible for the onlooker not to be reminded of the mysterious stone figures on the Easter Islands.
The legs are like the columns of a Greek temple. The lower legs have been made so long precisely so as to achieve this columnlike effect. The upper legs are short in proportion. The identical heads, which with their inscrutable and unfathomable expressions gaze out towards Skallingen and the entrance to the harbour, also contribute greatly to the glimpse you get of the supernatural - a hint of the divine.
The sculpture is not tied down to any one age. Its expressiveness, laden with atmosphere and emotion, makes it eternally valid.
That the number of figures sitting on the shore is precisely four is because Wiig Hansen found the number harmonious - more in accordance with the basic sculptural concept of "pure" mankind than, for example, three or five. Because of its size (it is nine metres tall) and charisma, the sculpture has become a landmark for Esbjerg. In clear weather the bodies, sitting there like unfurled sails, can be seen 10 kilometres away.
Esbjerg has been enriched by a monumental sculpture of international stature.
