Hanne's House has been owned by the Sørensen family since 1839 when Hanne's parents moved in. Her father drowned in 1860. Hanne's mother lived in the house until her death. In 1882 Hanne and her husband inherited the house. In 1884 when Hanne was 34 years old she became a widow as her husband was shipwrecked. Hanne, and later, her two daugters Karen and Maren, took great care of the house and its interior. Its furnishing has continually been used until 1965. On Fanø the house is the best preserved from the flourishing period of sailing ships.
The museum is set in Sønderho not far from the harbour.
